English Springer Spaniel

This breed was developed as a gun dog to flush game in the field. A medium sized dog ranging between 45-50cm. Athletic and versatile they have been known to participate in agility, hunt tests, tracking, obedience trials, as well as being the ideal loyal companion to hike with. Attentive and affectionate these spaniels make wonderful family pets and do well with children. Despite their working background Springers tend to get on with other pets. They have a strong desire to be with people and with their level of intelligence are reasonably easy to train. Most spaniels have a retrieving urge and will play fetch for hours; however, this can lead to chewing problems if left alone for long periods of time. Regular grooming is required to prevent matting around their ears and paws.

Poodle

This breed is divided into three varieties based on size; toy, miniature and standard. Poodles are a great family dog- fun, energetic, smart, and easy to train. It is known as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, enjoying agility and tracking activities. Since this pup is eager to please, he is the perfect pooch to teach entertaining tricks to, which is always a hit with the kids. They do best with plenty of exercise and prefer to be with people all the time and have a predisposition for getting separation anxiety. Unlike most dogs’ poodles’ fur will grow continuously and if left ungroomed they will be a dreadlocked mess.

Sproodle

A sproodle is a cross between a springer spaniel and a poodle. This hybrid breed combines the active, eager to please nature of the springer with the brains and low-shedding coat of a poodle. They’re an affectionate and energetic breed who love being around children and adults. They are usually playful and joyful dogs who bring much love and entertainment to everyone they meet. They are smart, curious, and eager to please which makes them very trainable. They are devoted to their owners and can therefore be prone to separation anxiety if left home alone for long periods of time. This is not a breed for people who want their dogs to live outside and keep to themselves. They are good with children, other dogs and do well in a multi-dog household.
Taking the time to socialise your sproodle to other dogs as early as possible will help this as well.

Poodles and Springer spaniels are both very active breeds and most sproodles will be as well. They will require daily physical and mental exercise, preferable in the company of people. Mental and social activity is also necessary for sproodles as they are highly intelligent dogs who will get bored and develop bad habits if they don’t have an outlet for their brain power. Regular training sessions, learning tricks or participating in sprot are some of the ways you can keep your sproodle busy. They have a soft, double layered, thick coat that can be medium in length or longer. Although they are low to non-moulting their coats can grow to between 4-7 inches and tends to get matted and tangled. Therefore, we recommend brushing your sproodle daily and visiting the groomers every 8-10 weeks for a trim.
